return to Compositions
1st Concerto for Tabla and Percussion Quartet:

This work is dedicated to Igor Lesnik, professor of percussion at Zagreb Academy in Zagreb, Croatia, where I premiered the work in 2002. The structure of this piece is roughly ABAB’A. The A sections feature the tabla as a solo instrument, and the B sections are ensemble ritornellos. In the first two sections of tabla solo, the tabla player performs a traditional bhumika, uthan, bant, and kaida. In the last section, he performs several fixed compositions (tukras). For this piece I did not write down the tukras, but rather let him choose different ones for each performance.
